WorkInProgress: Oilpainting

Week 3

This week I bought Mineral Spirit to clean my brushes with. (Yes, I failed to clean my brushes the first two sessions... It was awful. Finally went out and bought one)

It is unscented but still highly toxic.

My main brush (the largest one), and also bought two other smaller brushes for details.

As a beginner I find hard brushes easier to work and mix colours with.

I feel I have better control; But it may also be because I'm working on scenery.

Softer brushes may be needed for portraits and such, for softer details.

My main brush (is one of those cheap china hog-hair brushes):

I also bought some Pebeo oils. I don't know how good they are, but it was reasonably priced--which is why I bought to try.

The other reason is that it has Ochre! Since my mentor introduced ochre to me back in my art classes (when I was working with oil pastels) I discovered the value of this colour. Haha.

I feel it adds colour and character to any work -- and also because my winning piece was 75% ochre.

Anyway, here are the colours of Pebeo and LeFranc&Bourgeois:

Since last week, I have only used LeFranc&Bourgeois oils: (I have had this since 2004; It has been 11years since, and still workable. That's oils for you.)

And this is Pebeo's palette.

Comparison:

Colour comparison:

Pebeo's tubes are sealed; whilst LeFranc&Bourgeois' are only sealed with a thick layer of oil.

Colour mixing chart on Pebeo box.

Both of them are actually made in China.

So this week I drew the water in.

For this I used some Pebeo oils, the orangey shade. I find Pebeo's to have a rather strong vibrant colour.

Here is how it looks under white light:

Still under white light but not direct:

Painting can be quite messy and for some weird reason I keep dropping my brushes everywhere today.
(now I understand why people go through the trouble of covering their floors with newspapers)

I'm quite satisfied with the colour of the sky; but feel the rest needs more working on.

My palette. These are the colours I used.

This is my makeshift workspace:

First time I ever used this. (watched how people clean their brushes on yt)

The whole thing turned a cloudy blue, But the paint eventually settles later.

Sediments on the bottom.

Clipper Teas UK

For the longest time there aren't any bio products in my city. There are tiny specialized shops with imported organic stuff but it's too expensive!

Well, this was also terribly expensive. As with all other teas. Yeah well, there aren't a lot of tea-drinkers here.

When I went to Germany, I was surprised at the wide range of bio products. Wow. And they were really quite affordable too.

I also bought Arabica Coffee from the same brand

So much tea!

Bought the classic English Breakfast.

Beautiful packaging!

It's like they put so much thought into every box of tea!

I bought my favourite flavours, Earl Grey, Masala Chai, Mint.... :3

I'm already thinking of cutting these boxes up and turn these spoons into bookmarks!

The perfect tea after a meal.

And I just love the beautiful flavour of Earl Grey.

I tried the coffee the next day.:D

It was so freaking good too.

Incoming mail 20150319

Two postcards came in the mail today! X3

This one being my favourite, how I love art cards like this one!

(and coincidentally I was also hoping to receive a painting with a winter scene, somewhere along the lines of Brueghel. I love his works.)

The painting above shows A Quebec Village Street in 1920 by Clarence Alphonse Gagnon.

As you would have guessed, the card came all the way from Toronto, Canada. And this painting is on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario. ♡

My heartfelt thanks to the sender who went out of her way to get this card for me from the museum shop.:3

To add to the already lovely card, it came with a cute unstamped Ram stamp. ^_^

I received a similar Year of the Ram stamp from Singapore when I got that CNY card around February.:3

I certainly hope to get more of these stamps from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China -- to add to my collection. *A*

I also got this nice card from Indonesia, which came in with folds and smudgy inks (seriously bad handling).

But I appreciate the card nonetheless! ♡

---

However, one thing that really bothered me was when i caught this stranger from our apartment reading my cards! T_T

I was like "hey, ain't that mine???" =_=

Oh, sigh, them nosy people.

I'm so paranoid i keep checking the mailbox more than twice a day now!

WorkInProgress: Oilpainting

This weekend's progress:

I'm really quite enjoying this, painting in oil. (Well, minus the fact that I keep getting paint everywhere -- accidentally dropping my brushes and such).

But otherwise, it is such a fun hobby.

I'm waiting for it to dry before I continue.:3

Will work on the rest of the details next week.^_^
